The Punjab State Government has classified the industries based on the environmental
impact into Red and Green categories. Industries that fall under the red category
are potentially the most hazardous/highly polluting industries causing threat to
environment, and Industries that belong to the green category are the less/non-polluting

Categorisation of an Industry as Red/ Green greatly impacts the clearances required
for setting up the industry in the state. Depending upon the categorisation of the
industry, clearances are granted at different levels, viz. i) concerned state government
department/board, ii) state level committee (Competent State Authority cum Site Appraisal
Committee), iii) The Government of India.
Further, Some industries under the Green category enjoy exemptions from specific
clearances.
